UPDATED -- Angels 7, Mariners 1: Poor pitching kills any Seattle momentum from prior series

Published June 5, 2010 at 8:31 a.m.

So much for that great series against the Twins, huh? Momentum often stretches only as far as the next day's pitcher and Ian Snell walked three batters in the first three innings. Two of them came around to score and the Mariners were on their way to a loss.

Afterwards, Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu talked about the slow "tempo'' set for the team by Snell's outing. Snell threw 69 pitches the first three innings and Wakamatsu said it threw everything off for the rest of the club.

You can listen to some of what Wakamatsu said in the video clip above. He spoke a bit about it afterwards as well.

"I'm just thinking when you see what many pitches, you go back to (Doug) Fister and (Jason) Vargas) in Oakland and they both had quite a few pitches, being a bit too fine,'' Wakamatsu said. "It sets the tone for the defense. Sets the tone for the game.''

So, he's not talking about Snell's pacing o the mound or between pitches. More about how his plethora or pitches those early innings, and not attacking the zone, slows the entire game down and makes it tough on a team.

Snell seemed visibly frustrated when asked about Wakamatsu's comments.

"I have no comment on what he says,'' Snell said. "He can say whatever he wants, he's the manager. So, I'm just going to leave it at that. I've got pretty much nothing else to say about my tempo and whatever. I'm working on it. I'm trying my best and that's all I can do is give my best. I'm human. I'm not Superman.''

You can hear the clip right here.

After that, Snell said he had nothing left to say and walked off. Moments before, he'd talked about Hideki Matsui, who is now 5-for-9 off him with three homers and seven RBI lifetime.

"He owns me,'' Snell said. "I can't say nothing else. He's a good hitter and he owns me. I'm trying to figure out a way to get him out.''

Matsui, of course, hit a two-run homer after one of Snell's four walks issued over 5 1/3 innings. Then, after two more walks in the third, Matsui added an RBI single.
