Update on HB 2912 --- Bill passes but with no funds for Husky Stadium

Published Feb. 17, 2010 at 1:37 a.m.

On a bus heading from one Olympic venue to another and I see that House Bill 2912 passed today but with the prohibition against using the money for Husky Stadium remaining.

This is the bill that would allow King County to divvy up some local tourism taxes as it sees fit and UW had hoped it could get in line to ask for money to help pay for a renovation of Husky Stadium.

Here's the AP report on the bill

As the story notes, the bill now heads to the Senate, where it could be amended to allow for money to Husky Stadium.

But if it passes as is, UW would have to look elsewhere for money for a renovation of Husky Stadium, estimated to be $250-270 million. UW has been hoping to start construction after the 2010 season but those plans could be delayed if there is no public money forthcoming.

Jim Brunner, one of our political reporters, examined the issue last week, providing more detail of where the bill was headed.
