Ricky Foley was signed last week, mixed in with two long-snappers and a punter.
He was the CFL leader in sacks last season with 12, and the easy thing would be to write that the Seattle Seahawks have looked to their north in an effort to elevate the sack totals.
But no one should get too carried away. Not yet anyway. Foley is listed at 6 feet, 245 pounds on his official profile with the B.C. Lions. That's undersized for an NFL defensive end in a 4-3 scheme, and probably explains why New England was one of the other teams after Foley. He could fit as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme.
So what would Seattle want with him? Well, that's something we'll have to wait and see, but after hearing Pete Carroll mention the "elephant" pass-rusher position as somewhere Darryl Tapp could fit, it would seem Foley would have the same tools to be that roving pass-rusher. Will he fill that role? There's a long way between now and training camp, and Foley will turn 28 in June. He has already had one stint in the NFL. In 2006, he failed to make it to training camp with the Baltimore Ravens. Obviously, he has the speed that Seattle is interested in taking a look at him as a situational pass rusher.
